Washington: US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has warned North Korea that the US will retaliate with a “massive military response” if it launches a nuclear attack.
Kim Jong-un has ignored calls to back down from his reckless nuclear war and missile testing programme and has instead repeatedly to destroy threatened America, South Korea and Japan.
Sanctions and threats from the West have so far failed to stop the despot but officials are plotting a new way to intimidate North Korea.
The Defence Secretary said: “Make no mistake – any attack on the United States, or our allies, will be defeated.
“And any use of nuclear weapons will be met with a massive military response that is both effective and overwhelming.”
Mr Mattis has been at pains during his week-long trip to Asia to stress that diplomacy is America’s preferred course, a message he returned to after top-level military talks in Seoul on Saturday and the tense border area with North Korea on Friday.
